Commander Masters, anyone?

Magic: The Gathering’s Double Masters 2022 officially releases on July 8th. Double Masters 2022 is a Masters set containing 331 reprints, plus a new card in Cryptic Spires. Interestingly, Double Masters 2022 is designed around all ten of MTG’s three-color pairings, leading to a unique Draft experience. Speaking of Draft, each Double Masters 2022 Draft Booster has two card slots dedicated to rares and mythic rares and two traditional foil card slots that can be rares or mythic rares too!

Market Price: $8.34

"Muldrotha,

Market Price: $2.67

Many of Double Masters 2022’s reprints are popular Commander cards such as Path to Exile, Eternal Witness, Chaos Warp, and Anguished Unmaking. A handful of the most-played commanders like Animar, Soul of Elements, Muldrotha, the Gravetide, and Alta Palani, Nest Tender are also in Double Masters 2022. Although, Commander players are probably most excited for Double Masters 2022’s pricy and desirable chase rares and mythic rares. Let’s review the ten best Double Masters 2022 reprints you can pick up for Commander.

#10 City of Brass

City of Brass

"City

Market Price: $10.21

City of Brass last received a reprint in the 2013 release of Modern Masters. Nine years later, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) added City of Brass to Double Masters 2022 with two new stunning artworks! City of Brass is a nonbasic land that taps for one mana of any color and deals one damage to you whenever it becomes tapped.

In Commander, City of Brass is a fantastic color-fixing land for three to five color decks. Dragon, Shrine, Warrior, and Sliver tribal Commander decks may want City of Brass in their 99. If you are interested in building a multicolor Commander deck and don’t have a copy of City of Brass, you may want to pick one up when the set drops.

#9 Sensei’s Divining Top

Sensei’s Divining Top

Double Masters 2022 | Rare

"Sensei's

Market Price: $21.21

Sensei’s Diving Top is one of the most played artifacts in Commander and is in dire need of a reprint. Even though Sensei’s Diving Top saw a ban in both Modern and Legacy, it is perfectly legal in Commander. Sensei’s Diving Top’s first ability lets you look at the top three cards of your library and put them back in any order for one mana. Then, the second ability enables you to draw a card and place the artifact on top of your library.

"Yuriko,

Market Price: $8.07

"Yennett,

Market Price: $1.89

"Elsha

Commander cards that utilize the top of your library can maximize Sensei’s Diving Top’s potential. Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow, Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign, Elsha of the Infinite, and other commanders want Sensei’s Diving Top to enhance their abilities. Double Masters 2022 lets anyone missing Sensei’s Diving Top from the 99 of Commander deck at a reduced price.

#8 Teferi’s Protection

Teferi’s Protection

Double Masters 2022 | Rare

"Teferi's

Market Price: $26.53

Teferi’s Protection is a Commander staple and the fifth most-played white card on EDHREC. Teferi’s Protection’s ability prevents your life total from changing, grants you protection from everything, and phases out of the permanents you control until your next turn. Players interested in white Commander decks will want Teferi’s Protection in their collection. WotC’s efforts to reprint Teferi’s Protection in Strixhaven: School of Mages, Mystery Booster, a Secret Lair, and Double Masters 2022 will ensure it stays reasonably priced for players.

#7 Allosaurus Shepherd

Allosaurus Shepherd

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

"Allosaurus

Market Price: $23.25

The Jumpstart all-star, Allosaurus Shepherd, received its first reprint in Double Masters 2022. Allosaurus Shepherd is a 1/1/ Elf Shaman that can’t become countered, nor can green spells you control be countered. Also, Allosaurus Shepherd comes with a six-mana-activated ability that turns Elves you control into 5/5 Elf Dinosaur creatures until the end of turn.

"Ezuri,

Market Price: $8.18

"Elvish

Market Price: $20.49

"Marwyn,

Market Price: $1.90

Once a $100 card, Allosaurus Shepherd sees heavy play in Legacy and Elves tribal Commander decks. Since Allosaurus Shepherd’s price point is falling to around half its pre-Double Masters 2022 level, its Commander decklist inclusions should rise dramatically.

#6 Mana Drain

Mana Drain

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

"Mana

Market Price: $36.78

Mana Drain is a commonly-played Commander counter spell found in over 100,000 decklists on EDHREC. Mana Drain is essentially Counterspell with upside, providing an amount of colorless mana equal to the countered spell’s mana value at the beginning of your next main phase.

"Force

Market Price: $28.93

"Counterspell

Market Price: $5.07

"Swan

Market Price: $12.73

Although Mana Drain is an exception counter spell, its average market price hindered some players from playing it. Fortunately, the reprinting of Mana Drain in Double Masters 2022 may result in its lowest average market price for available copies. Expect Mana Drain to be added to more Commander decklists as more copies enter the secondary market once again.

#5 Mana Vault

Mana Vault

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

"Mana

Market Price: $40.17

Mana Vault is a prevalent and powerful artifact generating three colorless mana for only one mana. Commander and competitive Commander players utilize Mana Vault’s mana acceleration to ramp out spells, even though it has a drawback. Moreover, the benefit provided by Mana Vault outweighs the four mana to update it and the one damage it may deal during your upkeep. A reprint of Mana Vault offers players an excellent chance to grab a copy at a discount.

#4 Smothering Tithe

Smothering Tithe

Double Masters 2022 | Rare

"Smothering

Market Price: $25.48

White’s third most popular Commander card on EDHREC received a reprint in Double Masters 2022. Smothering Tithe is a four-mana enchantment that says whenever an opponent draws a card, they may pay two mana, or you get to create a Treasure token. Smothering Tithe makes plenty of Treasure tokens throughout a game if left unchecked. Excitedly, borderless artwork by Pete Venters offers an alternative option for players to add to their decks.

#3 Imperial Seal

Imperial Seal

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

"Imperial

Market Price: $80.32

Before Double Masters 2022, the average market price of Imperial Seal’s judge promo was close to $750 and even higher for a copy from Portal Three Kingdoms! Imperial Seal allows you to search your library for a card and put it on top at sorcery speed for one black mana and two life. While Imperial Seal is an effective tutor, supply scarcity was the main driver for its irrational price point.

"Vampiric

Market Price: $35.34

"Demonic

Market Price: $44.19

"Grim

Market Price: $17.95

Commander players are pleased with a reprint of Imperial Seal, increasing available copies and reducing its average market price considerably. Imperial Seal serves as a redundant, albeit less-powerful, Vampiric Tutor in black Commander decks. Considering Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutorare the two most-played black cards on EDHREC, it should not be surprising when Imperial Seal sees exponentially more play in Commander.

#2 Dockside Extortionist

Dockside Extortionist

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

"Dockside

Market Price: $56.44

Players anxiously awaited for a reprint of the Commander staple, Dockside Extortionist while previews were ongoing. New artwork accompanies Dockside Extortionist’s addition to Double Masters 2022. Dockside Extortionist provides a generous benefit for just two mana. Upon entering the battlefield, Dockside Extortionist creates X Treasure tokens, where X equals the number of artifacts and enchantments controlled by opponents. Dockside Extortionist is also part of many two and three-card infinite combos in Commander and Cube.

#1 Phyrexian Altar

Phyrexian Altar

Double Masters 2022 | Rare

"Phyrexian

Market Price: $23.27

It is hard to believe Phyrexian Altar was a $90 card before its spoiling in Double Masters 2022. Last printed in Ultimate Masters, Phyrexian Altar is a three-mana artifact that lets you sacrifice a creature to produce one mana of any color. Sacrifice outlets with no activation cost are often desirable in Commander. In addition, Phyrexian Altar enables multiple infinite combos. If the artifact’s previous price point indicates its playability and demand, expect Double Masters 2022 versions to get snatched up pretty soon after release. If you do not have a copy of Phyrexian Altar in your collection, now is an excellent opportunity to add it.
