Hot and fresh out of the oven, this batch of stunning cards is a feast for all.

Wilds of Eldraine’s release is on September 8, where the second return to Eldraine offers a more ominous outlook on the Arthurian plane due to the Wicked Slumber. With the rising tension between the Kenrith siblings and Ashiok causing havoc with the sleeping citizens’ dreams, there’s plenty on the horizon as we enter the first expansion of the Omenpath story arc, which will conclude in 2026.

It’s felt forever since we’ve had a Standard release due to Commander Masters and The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth taking the spotlight, but Wilds of Eldraine hopes to offer a bundle of exciting cards for Commander and constructed applications. With the return of Adventure and new mechanics in Bargain, Roles, and Celebration, there are plenty of different ways to play with Wild of Eldraine cards when cracking those Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters during Prerelease and beyond.

Similar to many other Standard expansions, there will be two Commander Precons to collect in Virtue and Valor and Fae Dominion, both of which highlight the whimsy and horrors of Eldraine. Virtue and Valor is led by Ellivere of the Wild Court, who cares about attaching Auras (more notably, Role tokens) onto creatures you control. And yes, this does mean Ellivere is an Enchantment-focused Commander as if we haven’t had enough of those recently. On the flip side, Fae Dominion has Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor at the helm, who cares about bolstering your Fae army while reaping value if any of your Faeries die. Typal Commanders tend to be extremely popular with casual players, and the Fae Dominion Precon will no doubt be a desirable purchase upon Wilds of Eldraine’s release.

And while Wilds of Eldraine pales in comparison to the absurdity that was Throne of Eldraine, there’s still plenty of exciting and gorgeous cards to collect upon release. With that, let’s look at the cards you’ll be thrilled to open in Wilds of Eldraine.

#10 Kellan, the Fae-Blooded (Borderless)

Wilds of Eldraine

"Kellan,

Leading the main story of Wilds of Eldraine is Kellan, Fae-Blodded, who is the son of Oko and looks to be a fantastic card to open in Wilds of Eldraine. What makes Kellan an exciting option for Commander, in particular, is how you have access to Open the Armory from the command zone, which allows for some shenanigans with Sunforger and Sword of the Animist to ensue. Many Boros Commanders tend to center around Aura and Equipment-focused synergies, with Nahiri, Forged in Fury from March of the Machine: The Aftermath is a popular Commander as of late, and Kellan, the Fae-Blooded looking to be no different.

"Sunforger"/

"Steelshaper's

"Embercleave"/

Through having Kellan on the battlefield and a pile of Auras and Equipment attached, the Fae-Blooded grants +1/+0 to your other creatures for each Aura and Equipment attached, which means the potential for massive damage output is rather high. Not to mention, Kellan comes with Double Strike, meaning that winning through Commander damage may not be as difficult as it seems. With Wilds of Eldraine’s release looming, Kellan, the Fae-Blooded looks to be an exciting Legendary to incorporate into Commander, whether that’s leading the charge or within the ninety-nine is up to you, and how much you enjoy grabbing an early lunch.

#9 Rowan, Scion of War (Borderless)

Wilds of Eldraine

"Rowan,

Another potentially exciting Commander is Rowan, Scion of War, who is becoming an antagonist if the story of Wilds of Eldraine is anything to go by as she fights her brother, Will, Scion of Peace, in an attempt restore Eldraine to its former glory. Story aside, Rowan looks to be a powerful Commander, especially in the competitive circles with haymaker spells such as Torment of Hailfire, Doomsday, and even Treasonous Ogre being a fantastic enabler for Rowan’s activated ability. There’s even talk of Rowan, Scion of War potentially appearing in competitive Commander circles as the activated ability is strong, where it compliments with many of the powerful spells seen in the high-powered format.

"Treasonous

Market Price: $12.08

"Torment

Market Price: $19.93

"Fire

Market Price: $20.26

Much like Kellan, the Fae-Blooded, you can expect Rowan to be a desirable card to acquire upon release as not only does she make for a strong Commander, but there’s plenty of flexibility when it comes to power level. While it’s easy to slide into the most optimized build possible, Kellan and Rowan, Scion of War make for flavorful Commanders that you can build casually or competitively. And with Commander players, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Borderless copies garner the most attention as players will want to adorn their build with the best-looking cards, even if this variant does look a little like Margot Robbie. Sorry, I just can’t unsee it.

#8 Greymond, Avacyn’s Stalwart (The List)

SLX Cards

"Greymond,

While cards from The List rarely appear here — this time — it is worth the exception. With the release of Wilds of Eldraine, The List is receiving some lovely additions, some of which have been a long-time request with players and collectors. Released in 2020, Secret Lair x The Walking Dead offered never-before-seen Magic designs on Universes Beyond cards, and while the community uproar was valid, Wizards of the Coast offered a compromise where it would incorporate in-Magic variants in The List of Standard releases. Over the last year, cards from Street Fighter and Stranger Things have seen in-Magic printings in Phyrexia: All Will Be One and Streets of New Capenna, and now The Walking Dead cards are finally appearing in Wilds of Eldraine.

"Gisa's

Market Price: $11.80

"Hansk,

"Malik,

What’s the fuss, you may ask? Well, there’s one particular card in Rick, Steadfast Leader that is easily the best card out of The Walking Dead Secret Lair, but it’s also priced out of reach for many players given how strong it is in Legacy and Commander along with a limited print run. With Wilds of Eldraine’s release, Greymond, Avacyn’s Stalwart will only be in Set Boosters along with the other in-Magic variant of The Walking Dead cards. For Commander, Greymond is an excellent addition to any Human-based build, especially if you run Winota, Joiner of Forces at the helm. While the price of these in-Magic The Walking Dead cards will likely come down upon release, you can expect Greymond, Avacyn’s Stalwart to be a desirable card with players, and could end up being a valuable one without realizing it.

#7 Agatha’s Soul Cauldron (Extended)

Wilds of Eldraine

"Agatha's

A card that is beginning to pique the interest of competitive players is Agatha’s Soul Cauldron, which is looking to be a brewer’s dream upon release as it synergizes well with Grist, the Hunger Tide and Metallic Mimic, where you can infinitely create creature tokens, infinite enter-the-battlefield triggers, and infinite self-mill. Much like other Commander staples such as Ashnod’s Altar and Devoted Druid, Agatha’s Soul Cauldron is the kind of card that you can accidentally combo off without realizing it because the ceiling is so high as it’s a colorless take on Necrotic Ooze.

"Grist,

"Metallic

"Master

In Modern, Hardened Scales are looking at Agatha’s Soul Cauldron as a fifth (and maybe even sixth) copy of Arcbound Ravager as it interacts well with Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista. As mentioned earlier, the ceiling is remarkably high on Agatha’s Soul Cauldron as it can combo out of nowhere, and the applications only increase the more cards that see print that can synergize with it. If you enjoy playing combo-orientated Magic, picking a couple of copies of the Legendary Artifact from Wilds of Eldraine will take you far, as it’s the kind of card that could very well increase in price over time given the combo potential with various other cards.

#6 Virtue of Knowledge (Showcase)

Wilds of Eldraine

"Virtue

As with any Standard release, there’s usually a new and exciting cycle of cards that will likely feature in numerous Magic formats, and the Virtue cycle looks no different. Focusing on Virtue of Knowledge in particular, the Enchantment joins the long line of Panharmonicon-style effects that make them a popular inclusion in Commander because who doesn’t love doubling enter-the-battlefield abilities?

"Virtue

Market Price: $18.77

"Virtue

Market Price: $16.29

"Virtue

What’s even more interesting about these Virtue cards is how they come with an Adventure attached — and with Virtue of Knowledge — it comes with Vantress Visions that allows you to copy target activated or triggered ability you control, and you can choose new targets for the copy. While the Adventure side is situational, the Enchantment side is genuinely exciting and can allow for some Commander nonsense, especially if there’s a Gadwick, the Wizened or Mulldrifter entering the battlefield. Like with Throne of Eldraine, the Storybook Showcase Frame returns for Wilds of Eldraine, where many will be looking to nab these stunning variants for their collection.

#5 Moonshaker Cavalry

Wilds of Eldraine

"Moonshaker

Dubbed as the White Craterhoof Behemoth, Moonshaker Cavalry offers an excellent win condition for White-heavy Commander builds that can’t utilize the Beast and the various ways to effectively tutor it. For Token-based and Mono-White Commanders, Moonshaker Cavalry is a must-have as it allows you to alpha strike to victory, and it becomes even more convincing if there’s a Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines or Panharmonicon on your side of the battlefield.

"Hylda

"Elesh

Market Price: $20.68

"Will,

Many White-based Commanders are interested in the Spirit Knight, such as Marneus Calgar, Rhys the Redeemed, and even Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir as Moonshaker Cavalry has the all-important Knight typing. Going further, Wilds of Eldraine Legendaries such as Will, Scion of Peace and Hylda of the Icy Crown could very well want the Mythic Rare because it ends games quickly and effectively. Upon Wilds of Eldraine’s release, many casual and competitively-minded players will be after Commander’s hottest win condition, and it’s bound to be an exciting card to open going forward.

#4 Doubling Season (Enchanting Tales)

Wilds of Eldraine: Enchanting Tales

"Doubling

Following a similar trend to March of the Machine’s Multiverse Legends, Wilds of Eldraine brings us Enchanting Tales, a bonus sheet incorporating some of Magic’s most iconic Enchantment cards. There’s 63 of these Enchanting Tales cards to collect that feature as part of the upcoming release where Doubling Season will be one of the most desirable Enchanting Tales cards to open in Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters.

While the inclusion of Doubling Season may seem odd due to Commander Masters, you can simply never have enough printings of Doubling Season as it’s a Commander staple for any strategy that incorporates Green. Through the sheer popularity of Commander, Doubling Season is just one of those cards that everyone wants to own at some point, and with Wilds of Eldraine, you have another opportunity to open the Enchantment card with some excellent The Goose Mother artwork, because peace was never an option on Eldraine.

#3 Smothering Tithe (Enchanting Tales – Anime Borderless)

Wilds of Eldraine: Enchanting Tales

"Smothering

Going further, Enchanting Tales also offers the opportunity to pick up these exciting Enchantment cards in Anime Borderless treatments. While there are only twenty of the Anime Borderless cards to collect, you can expect a subset of Magic players who will collect them all, and perhaps add a few of them to their Commander and constructed decks. In particular, Smothering Tithe looks to be a desirable option despite the recent reprint in Commander Masters.

While the markup on Anime artwork on Magic cards is a legitimate thing as seen in Jumpstart 2022 and Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, you can expect other Enchantment cards such as Greater Auramancy, Doubling Season, and Rhystic Study to be some of the biggest hits from the Anime Borderless series. As for pull rates, Wilds of Eldraine Draft and Set Boosters each have a dedicated slot that will always feature an Enchanting Tales card, but in 2.8% (1.1% for Rare and 1.7% for Mythic Rare) of Boosters, that dedicated slot will have an Anime Borderless card. And of course, Collector Boosters will feature traditional foils of these stunning Anime cards also.

#2 Beseech the Mirror (Extended)

Wilds of Eldraine

"Beseech

Beseech the Mirror was one of the early previews for Wilds of Eldraine, and even now, it continues to see plenty of hype with competitive players as it’s effectively a tutor with an improvised Kicker cost in Bargain. While it’s unlikely to see moderate impact in Standard and Pioneer, it’s Modern, Legacy, and Commander where the Sorcery will see representation best because it’s just so good with cards such as The One Ring, where you can Bargain the Legendary Artifact to get another one and trigger it’s “protection from everything” enter-the-battlefield ability again. Even in Legacy, you have the potential of a turn one kill if you have access to Dark Ritual, Lotus Petal, Lion’s Eye Diamond, and Gaea’s Will, where if you cast and buy these spells back enough with, Beseech the Mirror, you can do it all again to cast a Tendrils of Agony for free, and finishing the opponent as the Storm count is high enough.

"K'rrik,

"The

"Tendrils

As for Commander, Beseech the Mirror will be excellent in Black-based builds such as Prosper, Tome-Bound and K’rrik, Son of Yawgmoth as it’s just so easy to cast the spell ahead of schedule, and find what you need based on the situation. There’s a bunch of various ways you can break Beseech the Mirror in multiple formats, and while I don’t have time to list every single one, it’s a card you should definitely consider picking up upon release if you play Black in Commander, or just want take broken game actions in constructed.

#1 Rhystic Study (Enchanting Tales – Confetti Foil)

Wilds of Eldraine: Enchanting Tales

These Confetti Foil cards only appear on the Anime Borderless Enchanting Tales cards, where you have a chance (1.1% for Rares and 1.7% for Mythic Rares) to open one of these stunning cards, where Rhystic Study will be one of the cards everyone will want to open due to rarity and value. Rhystic Study is one of the best Enchantments you can play in Commander, where for one Blue mana, you can draw a bunch of cards while also slowly irritating your opponents when you proudly ask if they will play the one. Especially with cards such as Smothering Tithe, Doubling Season, and Rhystic Study, which are some of the most powerful cards you can play in Commander that also come in the stunning new glittery treatment.
