What is Competitive Commander (cEDH) in Magic: The Gathering?

Take Your Commander Deck to 11!

If you’re active in MTG circles, there’s a chance you’ve heard people mention cEDH or Competitive Elder Dragon Highlander. If you want to know more about it, you’re in the right place!

While it may sound like a format of its own, cEDH actually shares the card pool, rules, and everything else with Commander because, well, it is Commander! cEDH is used as a shortcut to lay down what people are looking for in a game: no holds barred, ultimate power, infinite combos powered by dual lands, and effective mana rocks are key to cEDH success. Let’s jump into everything you need to know!

Why Play Competitive Commander (cEDH)?

Chrome Mox (Borderless)

Market Price: $104.02

Dockside Extortionist (Foil Etched)

Market Price: $104.03

Sakashima of a Thousand Faces

Market Price: $27.31

If you’ve been searching for a powerful, cutthroat, but often still very casual and fun way to play Magic: The Gathering in a multiplayer setting, cEDH is for you! Many players have been jumping into Commander from other forms of Magic including Limited, Modern, and Legacy, but quickly find themselves not as satisfied with the social-first focus of the format. By jumping into competitive Commander, you will often have a fun and social experience but with no preference-based restriction on card choice or quality. In cEDH, players are looking to win and win fast. More than a format, it is of a mindset and metagame. In the words of cedh.guide, all strategies are accepted, decks majorly affect the game as soon as turn one, and players only make plays that help them win.

Though many people also assume that it is inaccessible due to cost (and believe me, the decks can be very expensive), it is also one of the most playtest (or proxy) card-friendly communities in existence! Go ahead, print out that Mox Diamond you don’t own, and jam. Plus, as you continue to invest in the format, you can rest easy knowing that your deck will stay legal. Commander itself is a very stable format that rares sees bans and even when they do come they rarely affect the most powerful end of games. cEDH gives you a chance to try out a powerful and dynamic form of Magic that tries to do the impossible: break a format that was purposefully meant not to be broken. But, most importantly, you can play almost anything you want, as long as it’s strong. If the puzzle of multiplayer play combined with a hundred-card singleton seems interesting to you, jump in!

What is Legal in Competitive Commander (cEDH)?

Black Lotus

Market Price: $11999.99

Primeval Titan
Tinker

As I alluded to above, since cEDH is just powered-up Commander, it shares its rules, which include card legality. This means you can play every card printed in MTG’s history, besides the cards banned in EDH, and in case you’ve forgotten what is on the ban list, here are the cards you cannot play:

  • 25 cards with the Card Type “Conspiracy.”
  • 9 cards that reference “playing for ante.”
  • Cards whose art, text, name, or combination thereof that are racially or culturally offensive are banned in all formats.
  • Ancestral Recall
  • Balance
  • Biorhythm
  • Black Lotus
  • Braids, Cabal Minion
  • Chaos Orb
  • Coalition Victory
  • Channel
  • Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

  • Sway of the Stars
  • Sylvan Primordial
  • Time Vault
  • Time Walk
  • Tinker
  • Tolarian Academy
  • Trade Secrets
  • Upheaval
  • Yawgmoth’s Bargain

Whew, that’s a lot! Some of the most powerful cards you could possibly play are banned, including most of the iconic Power Nine. However, there are plenty of excellent and strong cards to be played in the singleton format.

Ikoria: Lair Of Behemoths

Winota, Joiner of Forces (Extended Art) - Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths - Magic: The Gathering

Market Price: $11.99

Winota, Joiner of Forces rounds out my selection of decks by bringing a unique (and very successful strategy to the table). First, it deploys its Commander quickly, following it up with non-Human token-producing creatures (such as Legion Warboss). Finally, it enters the combat step, cheating in multiple hatebear Humans that will disrupt its opponent’s game plan (Playing a Magus of the Moon that your opponents don’t have a window to interact with? Pretty good). Finally, it closes the game through Blade Historian, Rick, Steadfast Leader, and other similar effects.

Staple Competitive Commander (cEDH) Cards and Combos

Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora

Mystic Remora (Borderless)

Market Price: $18.68

Rhystic Study

Market Price: $41.57

There may be no cards more iconic in cEDH than these two enchantments. Every blue deck looks to these cards to win games without explicitly winning the game. Both are incredibly powerful card advantage engines that many cEDH matches rotate around, and be careful to pay your opponent’s Rhystic Study tax, lest they run away with the game. Avoid falling into the “Feeding the Fish” trap, where you cast non-creature spells into Mystic Remora in early turns of the game unless you put yourself too far by not developing your own board!

Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond, Mox Opal, Chrome Mox, and Sol Ring

Mana Crypt (Borderless)

Double Masters

Mana Crypt (Borderless) - Double Masters - Magic: The Gathering

Market Price: $257.39

Mox Diamond

Market Price: $616.09

Mox Opal (Borderless)

Market Price: $121.41

Chrome Mox

Market Price: $79.71

This long list of incredibly powerful mana-producing artifacts forms the bedrock beneath many a cEDH deck. Since we’re going to go as quickly as possible, it can be tricky to leave home without them. Nearly every cEDH deck plays them, and you’ll be casting them too!

Original Duals and Fetchlands

Underground Sea

Unlimited Edition

Underground Sea - Unlimited Edition - Magic: The Gathering

Market Price: $900.00

Wooded Foothills

Market Price: $234.24

Volcanic Island

Market Price: $980.97

Flooded Strand

Market Price: $259.71

Like with any other iteration of eternal Magic, you can find the original duals and fetchlands present in cEDH. Many decks are playing, at minimum, three colors, with many going as high as four or five. Access to the whole suite of fetches and duals ensures you’ll always have the right mana when you’re looking for it, all for the low price of one life. Hey, having access to a shuffle from time to time is ideal as well.

Dockside Extortionist

Dockside Extortionist (Borderless)

Double Masters 2022

Dockside Extortionist (Borderless) - Double Masters 2022 - Magic: The Gathering

Market Price: $56.66

When you’re looking to create a lot of mana quickly (and your opponents are usually jamming a lot of artifacts), look no further than Dockside Extortionist. In between its pure mana-creating ability that causes truly explosive turns and its presence in a few game-winning loops, it has been and will continue to be a staple until the day the Rules Committee bans it.

Force of Will (plus other cheap interaction)

Force of Will (Borderless)

Market Price: $63.50

Mindbreak Trap

Market Price: $45.63

An Offer You Can't Refuse

When your opponents are trying to win quickly, you have to be able to stop them in your tracks — Force of Will, Force of Negation, An Offer You Can’t Refuse, Mindbreak Trap, and Pact of Negation are just a few of the options you have to stop your opponents for cheap (or free). Of course, they all require blue, but that is the cost of doing business in cEDH.

Thassa’s Oracle and Demonic Consultation (or Tainted Pact)

Thassa's Oracle (Extended Art)

Market Price: $26.09

Demonic Consultation

Market Price: $14.18

Tainted Pact (Foil Etched)

Market Price: $12.15

There is no combo more effective than this Dimir selection. Cast Thassa’s Oracle and, in response to its activated ability, cast Demonic Consultation (naming a card that isn’t in your deck) or Tainted Pact (with a unique mana base) and you should win well within your grasp. This is the combo that many of the top decks in the format will use to beat you — bring it with you or have a plan for it.

Underworld Breach, Lion’s Eye Diamond, and Brain Freeze

Underworld Breach (Extended Art)

Market Price: $26.76

Lion's Eye Diamond

Market Price: $479.67

Brain Freeze

Another incredibly powerful combo that you’ll often see end games of cEDH involves these three cards. Cast Underworld Breach, cast Lion’s Eye Diamond, crack Lion’s Eye Diamond to discard your hand, escape Lion’s Eye Diamond from your graveyard, crack it again to make more mana and then, cast Brain Freeze, milling cards into your graveyard equal to Storm. I’m sure you can see where this is going, where you can win with your own Thassa’s Oracle or continue escaping Brain Freeze to mill your opponents!

Budget-Friendly Competitive Commander (cEDH) Decks

I’m sure after looking at the cards and Commanders I mentioned above, you’re starting to sweat about the cost of cEDH. Rest easy, there are plenty of budget-friendly lists and upgrade paths for cEDH decks for those wanting to own their lists fully. In fact, there’s an entire Discord community, cEDH Budget Brews, dedicated to the pursuit. Here, for example, is a relatively simple deck to start on that is roughly under $500 at the time of publishing.

Despite being nearly seven thousand dollars cheaper than the one mentioned earlier, this build offers plenty of power yet keeps together the core plan of the deck while skipping on the most expensive mana rocks and lands. While this may make your mana harder, you still have plenty of powerful cards on the list that will guide you to victory!
