Syr-round your opponents with our exclusive Edge of Eternities preview card!
Edge of Eternitiesseems to be filled with a bunch of banger cards. Along with all of the new Spacecraft options, most of which are the very epitome of battlecruiser Magic, there are some remarkably strong cards for already established archetypes. In fact, TCGplayer’s exclusive Edge of Eternities preview card is going to slot right into all of the Blink strategies seeing play right now and beyond.
Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar
Edge of Eternities, Rare

Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar does an awful lot for two mana. Whenever another creature you control dies or goes into exile, Syr Vondam gets a +1/+1 counter, and you gain one life. Frankly, that’s already enough to make this an auto-include in Modern’s Orzhov and Esper Blink decks alongside cards like Ketramose, the New Dawn. You’re getting serious value for just sticking with your general game plan, not to mention how this thing offsets the life loss from exiling cards while Ketramose is in play.
However, it gets better still. When Syr Vondam dies or becomes exiled, and if it has a power of four or greater (so, at least two +1/+1 counters on it), you can destroy up to one target nonland permanent. Having the choice here means it’s never going to make you destroy your own cards in play, just in case you use one of the many combinations invoked by our lord and savior, Eldrazi Displacer and the adorable Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd.
Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar
Edge of Eternities, Rare

There’s most definitely a world in which you can use passive effects from different anthems (such as Flowering of the White Tree) or Planeswalkers to get Syr Vondam to four power without any counters at all. All of this can lead you to have a repeatable way to destroy nonland permanents, where Syr Vondam happens to be a Knight and also a Human. Both of these creature types are incredibly relevant, with Knights being huge in Commander thanks to March the Machine’s Cavalry Charge Deck, with Humans continuing to see play as an archetype in plenty of different formats, including competitive ones.
There’s a real possibility that we see Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar break out as a key player in constructed formats alongside Commander. However, the power of this one as a Commander on its own isn’t as high as it is in the actual deck alongside more dedicated Blink Commanders. It won’t be bad either way, though.

Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention the synergy this card has in the Edge of Eternities set itself. The new Warp mechanic means that a lot more of your cards will be going to exile just while you’re playing them, and Void wants you to be doing that as well. This thing benefits massively from a lot of the cards we’ve already seen from the set, like Haliya, Guided by Light, Cosmogrand Zenith, and even more aggressive cards like Timeline Culler.
We’re very excited to actually get to play with Syr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar, and we think a lot of you will be as well.
