The Crazy Valuable MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo Cards You Don’t Know About

There’s a lot of Gil in these Promos.

Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY has been out in the wild for some time now, and it continues to be one of the hottest Magic sets in, well, ever (no, really). In the years of covering Magic: The Gathering here at TCGplayer, I haven’t ever experienced a Magic release as impactful as this one, and I doubt I will for some time.

But, I’m not here to talk about the Standard set today — instead, I’ll be discussing some of the unique Promotional cards Wizards of the Coast distributed alongside MTG—FINAL FANTASY’s release that have become desirable collector pieces on the secondary market. Whenever Wizards of the Coast prints these exclusive Universes Beyond Promo cards, they can command serious value as collectors look to acquire every single card associated with their favorite intellectual property, and Final Fantasy is certainly no different.

The Crazy Valuable MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo Cards You Don’t Know About

Torgal, Clive's Companion - Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful (MagicCon: Las Vegas 2025)

Market Price: $40.12

Joshua Rosfield - Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh (Borderless)

Market Price: $163.26

Culling Ritual

Market Price: $10.34

While not exhaustive, let’s look at some of the Promo cards supporting the MTG—FINAL FANTASY release that you might not know about. Even months after the Standard release, a lot is going on with MTG—FINAL FANTASY — and there’s a deep level of collectibility that we haven’t experienced in Magic: The Gathering until now.

And with collectibility, value often follows shortly behind. Many of the Promos we’ll be discussing today are limited in number, such as Torgal, Clive’s Companion (a MagicCon: Las Vegas 2025 attendance Promo) and Joshua Rosfield (a CommandFest 2025 attendance Promo), meaning there’s plenty to collect at different price points if you’re a budding Final Fantasy enthusiast.

Force of Negation (Japanese – Buy-a-Box Promo)

Force of Negation - Buy-A-Box Promos - magic

Appearing as one of three exclusive Buy-a-Box Promos with any purchase of an MTG—FINAL FANTASY Japanese Play Booster Box, a Japanese printing of Force of Negation was the big ticket card upon the set’s release. With a total of 2000 copies in the wild, Force of Negation is one of the rarest MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo cards you can collect, depicting Final Fantasy 8’s (VIII) Edea Kramer deflecting a shot from Irvine. As for the other two, non-foil and traditional foil copies of Arcane Denial highlight’s Final Fantasy 14’s (XIV) Endsinger and are more accessible to acquire.

At the time of publication, the Japanese Force of Negation is hovering around the $2000 range, with sales made between $2000 and $2200 on TCGplayer’s Marketplace already. While it may seem unusual to have such desirable promotional card in Japanese, Wizards of the Coast did this to sweeten the pot with players and give them something unique to collect when purchasing Japanese MTG—FINAL FANTASY Play Boosters. Over time, you can expect the value of Force of Negation to rise, given the deep collectibility of the Final Fantasy franchise.

Bhujerba, Floating City (City of Brass – Store Championship Promo)

City of Brass - Game Day & Store Championship Promos - magic

Next up is Bhujerba, Floating City (City of Brass), which is becoming an incredibly desirable Promo card to own since it was the prize for winning an MTG—FINAL FANTASY Store Championship. These events ran from mid-to-late July, allowing players to claim bragging rights as the best competitive player at their local game store. That isn’t all, as participating Store Championship players also received a Prophetic Beginning (Preordain), with Top 8 competitors receiving a Diabolos, Guardian Force (Death’s Shadow) for their troubles. However, it’s Bhujerba, Floating City that commands the most value, as City of Brass is a heavily-played card in Commander (especially with all of those multicolor MTG—FINAL FANTASY Commanders knocking about).

Diabolos, Guardian Force - Death's Shadow

Market Price: $12.90

Prophetic Beginning - Preordain
Despark

Market Price: $14.36

While not part of the Standard Showdown, it’s worth quickly highlighting Despark and Culling Ritual Promos, which are two more heavily-played cards adorned with the Final Fantasy treatment. These were given to players who attended the MTG—FINAL FANTASY Commander Party at their local games store, with traditional foils only being available at stores associated with the Wizards Play Network (WPN). As for the cards themselves, Culling Ritual displays the Four Fiends from Final Fantasy 4 (IV), with Despark highlighting an emotionally damaging moment from Final Fantasy 14 (XIV).

Squall, SeeD Mercenary (Standard Showdown Promo)

Another Promo for winning Standard Constructed events is the Borderless Squall, SeeD Mercenary card, which depicts the memorable ballroom dance scene from Final Fantasy 8 (VIII). If you’re new to Magic: The Gathering, Standard Showdowns are local store-run events (often hosted a few weeks before the Store Championships) as an opportunity for players to hone their skills and win Promo cards for winning these events. For MTG—FINAL FANTASY, Squall was one of the cards players could with from playing this particular Standard Showdown, with the other being Final Fantasy 14 (XIV)’s Ultima.

Standard Showdowns for MTG—FINAL FANTASY wrapped up in mid-July, meaning these Promo cards are now starting to trickle through onto the secondary market. However, the Squall, SeeD Mercenary Promo card is commanding the most value out of the two — maybe because it’s the best-looking card in the room.

Swords to Plowshares and Alphinaud (MagicCon: Las Vegas 2025 Promo)

Swords to Plowshares (Borderless)

Market Price: $482.57

Alphinaud (PR-190/12-004R)

Market Price: $87.12

Appearing as Promos for taking part in any side event that used MTG—FINAL FANTASY products at MagicCon: Las Vegas 2025, Swords to Plowshares (depicting Alisaie) and FINAL FANTASY Trading Card Game’s Alphinaud are some of the more visually unique cards to support the release — when paired together, they form a complete image!

Final Fantasy 14 (XIV) remains one of the more popular games in the series, meaning many of the MTG—FINAL FANTASY cards have become seriously valuable over time due to demand, such as the Character Borderless Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed (Surge Foil). While the Alisaie and Alphinaud Promos from MagicCon: Las Vegas 2025 are in English, Japanese copies are also available on the secondary market, and these were distributed to players who attended the Team Limited Open event at Magic Spotlight Series: FINAL FANTASY in Chiba, Japan. Furthermore, there’s an opportunity to acquire these Alisaie and Alphinaud Promos by participating in the FINAL FANTASY Trading Card Game’s North American or European Championships later this year, meaning more English copies will enter the secondary market (which may influence prices; but it’s hard to tell currently).

Tifa Lockhart (Pro Tour Qualifier Promo)

Tifa Lockhart

MagicFest Cards, Rare

Tifa Lockhart - MagicFest Cards - magic

Tifa Lockhart is another sought-after Final Fantasy Promo card, and could only be acquired at MagicCon: Las Vegas 2025 by playing in one of the many Pro Tour Qualifiers (PTQs) held across the weekend. Attendees of these PTQs were given a non-foil copy of Tifa, with Top 4 finishers receiving a traditional foil. With roughly 1000 non-foil copies and around 250 traditional foil copies in existence, Tifa Lockhart is becoming one of the high-value Promo cards associated with MTG—FINAL FANTASY. At the time of publication, non-foils are selling for just under $1000, with a few traditional foils sold within the $4500-5000 range.

As for the card, Tifa Lockhart has become an incredible payoff for any player who loves playing Landfall or Land-based strategies. Tifa is even seeing play in Standard Constructed, as part of the explosive Mono-Green (and Gruul) Landfall strategy along with Traveling Chocobo from MTG—FINAL FANTASY. What makes this particular Promo card desirable is that it highlights Tifa in the exotic Kimono dress as part of the memorable Don Corneo infiltration mission in Final Fantasy VII: Remake. And if you’re new to the game, MTG—FINAL FANTASY has broken the dam in terms of card collectibility, meaning there are collectors out there who want to own every single printing of their favorite character in the Magic: The Gathering set.

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary (Pro Tour: FINAL FANTASY Promo)

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary - Pro Tour Promos - magic

And lastly, the most expensive MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo card is the stunning Cloud, Midgar Mercenary, with works by none other than the legendary 野村哲也/TETSUYA NOMURA! English versions of the card were distributed to invited players at Pro Tour: FINAL FANTASY (which means there are around 331 copies in existence), with the Top 32 finishers also receiving a traditional foil copy! At the time of publication, English non-foil copies of Cloud, Midgar Mercenary are in the several thousands, with traditional foils easily reaching into the five-figure range.

That said, Japanese copies of this Borderless Cloud, Midgar Mercenary are slightly more common as these were given to every participant of Magic Spotlight Series: FINAL FANTASY held in Chiba, Japan. According to the digital tournament platform MTG Melee, there were 2248 players at the Magic Spotlight event, where the Top 128 finishers also received a traditional foil copy of the card. As a result, this printing of Cloud, Midgar Mercenary is one of the most valuble Pro Tour Promo cards — with The Lord of the Ring’s Gandalf the White and Sauron, the Dark Lord following behind.

Aerith Gainsborough (Regional Championship Qualifier Promo)

The Crazy Valuable MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo Cards You Don't Know About Aerith Gainsborough Final Fantasy VII

While we’ve covered several MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo cards today, there’s one more that’s dropping in the coming months for participants of the October 11 to November 23 Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs). If you aren’t familiar, RCQs are events hosted at local game stores that can start your journey to the Pro Tour. Perform well (or even win) in one of these RCQs, then you’ll be invited to play in the Regional Championships (RCs), and if you do well in one of those, you’ll qualify for the Pro Tour!

This Fall’s RCQ Promo is none other than Aerith Gainsborough coming in with the steel chair (also aptly named “Chairith” by the Final Fantasy community) that’s become a very notable scene from Final Fantasy VII: Remake and the Don Corneo story arc. Any RCQ participant during the October and November period will receive a non-foil copy of Aerith Gainsborough, where top finishers will also receive a traditional foil copy. As usual with these kinds of Promos, the traditional foils will be rarer than non-foils, meaning these will be more valuable long-term due to scarcity and the association with the Final Fantasy franchise.

If you want to read more about how to participate in an upcoming RCQ, Wizards of the Coast has everything you need to know to help begin your competitive journey.
