Does whatever a Spider can.
Who are the best Marvel’s Spider-Man Commanders, and how many of them want pictures of the vigilante? Also, how many of them are called Spider-Man? As the penultimate set of the year (which is also the first proper Marvel set), this release has a fair bit riding on it. It’s also not coming with Commander Precon Decks, despite featuring an overwhelming number of new Commander options.

We’ve done our best to whittle down the silly number of options into a more manageable collection. So, if you just want to know which Commanders you should be checking out from Marvel’s Spider-Man, you’re in the right place to find that out. We just want to help you save some time, you know?
#10 Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade
Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rare

Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade is the only colorless legendary in Marvel’s Spider-Man, which allows you to put a +1/+1 counter on each artifact and each vehicle you control. If that wasn’t enough, you can also remove counters from among artifact cards you control to draw a card. While there are several challenges to building a colorless Commander deck these days, there’s plenty of oomph with Iron Spider as it comes with a decent mix of abilities while also becoming a power-crept Steel Overseer.
#9 J. Jonah Jameson
J. Jonah Jameson
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rare

J. Jonah Jameson is perhaps one of the most flavorful options from Marvel’s Spider-Man, as it enables you to suspect a creature when it enters. If you don’t remember Murders at Karlov Manor, suspected creatures are unable to block, but do gain menace instead. However, if you attack with a creature that has menace, you create a Treasure token. In Magic: The Gathering, there are roughly 150 cards that have menace and are available to play in Mono-Red, meaning you could build an aggressive strategy while keeping the amusing flavor.
#8 Spider-Ham, Peter Porker
Spider-Ham, Peter Porker
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rare

Spider-Ham, Peter Porker flavorfully creates a Food token as he enters, but more importantly, the card gives other Spider, Boars, Bats, Bears, Birds, Cat, Dogs, Frogs, Jackal, Lizards, Mice, Otters, Rabbits, Racoons, Rats, Squirrels, Turtles, and Wolves +1/+1 — so essentially, this means almost every card printed in Bloomburrow. Having access to a Commander that can boost so many different creature types is a lot of fun, and one that can create some silly Commander decks as a result.
#7 Mister Negative
Mister Negative
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Mister Negative comes with an interesting ability at seven mana, where you may exchange your life total with an opponent. If you do this and you happen to lose life this way, you draw that many cards. This is a unique ability to have in Commander (especially in the command zone), and becomes deadly if paired with Eldrazi Displacer and Teleportation Circle. It’s also worth quickly noting if you receive more life from your opponent due to the exchange, this counts as lifegain — so you’ll reap extra benefits if any cards that trigger lifegain specifically.
#6 Cosmic Spider-Man
Cosmic Spider-Man
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Cosmic Spider-Man is the default five-color Commander option from Marvel’s Spider-Man, allowing you to give every Spider you control flying, first strike, trample, lifelink, and haste until the end of the turn. It’s a simple but powerful series of effects, but also a little uninspiring for a five-color Commander. However, Cosmic Spider-Man does allow you to play every card from the set, which is something many will be interested in doing upon Marvel’s Spider-Man’s release.
#5 Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer
Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Despite the demanding mana cost, Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer can become a gnarly Commander. For five mana, Anti-Venom returns a creature card from the graveyard to the battlefield (as long as Anti-Venom was cast), where it’ll also prevent any damage dealt to Anti-Venom and let you put that many +1/+1 counters on him instead. This is probably one of the best Mono-White Commanders we’ve seen in a while, and one that you’ll want to pair with With Great Power… for more hilarity.
#4 Gwen Stacy // Ghost-Spider
Gwen Stacy
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Gwen Stacy is one of the few cards that comes with a second side, where she’ll exile the top card of your library as she enters, and you can play that card for as long as you control Gwen Stacy. You can also pay five mana to flip Gwen into Ghost-Spider, who gains a +1/+1 counter whenever you play a land or cast a spell from exile. That isn’t all, as you’re also able to remove two counters (note, they don’t have to be +1/+1 counters) to exile the top card of your library, and you may play that card this turn. Gwen comes with a suite of excellent abilities in an archetype that’s becoming stronger at a rapid pace.
#3 Morlun, Devourer of Spiders
Morlun, Devourer of Spiders
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rare

Morlun, Devourer of Spiders comes with two powerful effects. The first is that he enters with X +1/+1 counters, which is ideal if you want a Commander that scales in power depending on how early or late you cast him. Second, Morlun will deal X damage to an opponent as it enters, and with lifelink baked in here, it means you’ll be gaining some life as part of the effect as well. Morlun is also a Vampire, which remains a popular Kindred strategy to play in Commander. Either way, this card is powerful and one that’ll end more games than it reads.
#2 Electro, Assaulting Battery
Electro, Assaulting Battery
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rare

Electro, Assaulting Battery is one of the more talked-about Commanders from Marvel’s Spider-Man, who comes with an awful lot of text — maybe too much? Who knows? Electro makes it so that you don’t lose any red mana as steps and phases end, but you also gain a red mana for each time you cast an instant or sorcery spell. And if having a bunch of red mana lying around wasn’t good enough, Electro also deals X damage to target player if you pay X mana as Electro leaves the battlefield. Spellslinger archetypes continue to be popular in Commander (thanks, Vivi Ornitier), so there’s no doubt that Electro is going to be another incredible option in the format.
#1 Gwenom, Remorseless
Gwenom, Remorseless
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

If you happen to be a fan of Bolas’s Citadel, then we have the Commander for you. Gwenom, Remorseless can look at the top card of your library at any time, and you may play those cards from the top of your library. Also, you pay life equal to the card’s mana cost rather than paying the mana cost of that spell to cast it — you do need to attack with Gwenom to unlock all of this value, but we’re expecting this card to see a shocking amount of play upon Marvel’s Spider-Man’s release. And yes, we’re a bit sad we didn’t use that pun for Electro.
