Making molehills out of mountains.
With so many new cards to choose from, you just know we had to make a list of the best Commander cards from Magic: The Gathering’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. There are so many interesting, powerful, and just plain fun cards in this set — our only complaint is that there are no Commander Precon Decks this time around. Seriously, how did this happen? We’re going to make our own ones to help you get started, but it’s still a shame.
The Best Commander Cards from MTG | Avatar: The Last Airbender

Market Price: $18.57

Today, we’re going to go through our picks for the best Commander cards from Avatar: The Last Airbender. We’re mostly staying away from cards that can be commanders, so while there are legendary creatures featured today, we think they’re good in decks and not necessarily at the helm of them.
#10 The Walls of Ba Sing Se
The Walls of Ba Sing Se
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mythic

The Walls of Ba Sing Se is an eight-mana 0/30 with defender that gives all of your other permanents indestructible. It’s a novel design, but this is a beast in any toughness-matters decks (such as the recent Abzan Armor Commander Precon Deck from Tarkir: Dragonstorm), along with being good in just about everything because of the passive indestructible effect. While not every Commander deck will want The Walls of Ba Sing Se, there’s a good number that will, since protecting every permanent you control in play is quite strong.
#9 Katara, the Fearless
Katara, the Fearless
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rare

Katara, the Fearless is a three-mana green, white, and blue card that doubles all of your Ally triggers. Look, it doesn’t have to be fancy to be potent in Commander — with how good Ally cards were anyway, and how many strong options we got in this set, this is a very powerful Commander card. If you see it on the board and you didn’t play it yourself, it’s a kill-on-sight card.
#8 The Unagi of Kyoshi Island
The Unagi of Kyoshi Island
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rare

The Unagi of Kyoshi Island comes with flash and a ward cost of waterbend 4, it lets you draw a card whenever an opponent draws their second card during a turn. This should result in a shocking number of extra cards over the course of a Commander game, and can trigger for every turn for every opponent, making it especially good in groups with a ton of card draw.
#7 The Fire Nation Drill
The Fire Nation Drill
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rare

The Fire Nation Drill is an interesting card if you’re looking for utility at the Commander table, as when it enters, it’ll destroy target creature with power four or less. Along with that, it lets you pay one mana to make permanents your opponents control lose hexproof and indestructible until the end of the turn. This is a good mix of abilities and has the ability to rumble in the red zone with an affordable crew cost.
#6 Fated Firepower
Fated Firepower
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mythic

Fated Firepower is a card that can encourage a ton of damage — as when it enters, the card comes in with X fire counters on it. From there, anytime a source you control would deal damage to someone or a permanent they control, it deals that much plus the number of fire counters on this card. What’s good here, is that you can pretty comfortably add counters thanks to proliferate, making it a card that just becomes stronger as the game progresses.
#5 Secret of Bloodbending
Secret of Bloodbending
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mythic

Secret of Bloodbending allows you to take control of a target opponent during their next combat phase, if you do pay the lofty waterbend 10 cost, you get to control them during their entire turn. Being able to take control of a player is historically powerful in Commander, and being able to tap permanents to help pay for additional costs makes this even stronger.
#4 Avatar Destiny
Avatar Destiny
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rare

Avatar Destiny is a curious card, and one that can turn the enchanted creature into an Avatar along with a power boost depending on how many creatures are in your graveyard. Along with that, it reads, “When enchanted creature dies, mill cards equal to its power. Return this card to its owner’s hand and up to one creature card milled this way to the battlefield under your control.” This is just an exceptionally fun card, and also a really strong one in a lot of different Commander decks.
#3 Secret Tunnel
Secret Tunnel
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rare

You probably can’t read this card without thinking about the song from Avatar: The Last Airbender, but we’re going to try anyway. Secret Tunnel is an interesting utility land for Commander play — it taps for colorless and can make two creatures you control unblockable as long as they share a creature type. Interestingly, the land itself is also unblockable which makes it a really nice payoff for all of the earthbending shenanigans you can do in the Avatar: The Last Airbender set. That said, Secret Tunnel is a solid upgrade to Rogue’s Passage, and you’re going to want to stock up on a few copies because it can go in quite literally every Commander deck.
#2 Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong
Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mythic

Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong is an incredible engine if you want nothing more than to cheat ahead on resources. The Planetarium also reads “Whenever you scry or surveil, look at the top card of your library. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Do this only once each turn.” This happens after you’ve finished the scry or surveil, meaning you get to pick what you want to cast for free. This card will generate a lot of advantage throughout a game and since it’s colorless, it can find a home in a lot of Commander decks.
#1 Badgermole Cub
Badgermole Cub
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mythic

Badgermole Cub is perhaps one of the most-hyped cards from Avatar: The Last Airbender, as this two mana card allows you to earthbend 1 as it enters, but mostly it is here because it adds an extra one green mana to your pool whenever you tap a creature for mana. Obviously, this includes any lands you’ve turned into creatures through earthbending, but it also means your mana-generating creatures like Llanowar Elves can ramp you on mana further, along with Cryptolith Rite now becoming truly absurd in Commander.
