Secrets of Strixhaven is a mighty return to school for all of us, and this semester brings with it a whopping five Commander Decks. Each represents one of the five colleges and comes with two main Commander options to choose from. Lorehold Spirit is headed up by Quintorius, History Chaser: a Planeswalker all about making spirits when cards leave your graveyard, and then finishing the game off by handing out double strike.

Silverquill Influence has the dapper Killian, Decisive Mentor up front, wielding auras and controlling the battlefield by forcing attacks. Witherbloom Pestilence is the ickiest sounding deck, but has some of the most impressive artwork on Dina, Essence Brewer, which converts sacrificed creatures into life gain and +1/+1 counters. Quandrix Unlimited sees Zimone back again as Zimone, Infinite Analyst, and it’s loaded with spells with a cost of X. Finally, Prismari Artistry has Rootha, Mastering the Moment leading the creative charge with an arsenal of instant and sorcery spells that generate ever-changing tokens.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did us a solid by only having only one Commander Deck this time around. This deck has a stacked line-up that’s filled with a massive number of staples – both old and new – and 43 cards being brand new to Magic. It’s a beast of a deck which offers a lot of build potential for anybody picking it up, as well as plenty of cards to steal from it for other decks. These Commander Decks tend to be heavily printed, which means you can find a good deal pretty easily.

Lorwyn Eclipsed has brought us back to the wonderful plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, and with it comes a whole host of amazing new typal cards for some of the most popular creature types in Magic. The set brings with it two Commander Decks. First up is Dance of the Elements with Ashling, the Limitless, a five-color Elemental typal deck all about sacrificing creatures and creating token copies.

Arguably, the more interesting one out of the two is Blight Curse and Auntie Ool, Cursewretch, a black, red, and green deck focusing on -1/-1 counters and getting an absurd amount of value whether you place them on opposing creatures or your own. They’re both a lot of fun.

Edge of Eternities brings us to space. It’s a bit of a change of pace, but it’s also a set filled with some really cool mechanics and flavor, which has been well-received by players. Edge of Eternities also takes us back to only having two Commander Decks. Both decks deliver familiar gameplay, and each of them includes a legendary Spacecraft you can use as your Commander.

The two Commander decks have very different strategies from one another. World Shaper lets you take Hearthhull, the Worldseed into the realm of sacrificing lands, and has a nice mix of Landfall triggers and sacrifice synergies to muck around with. Meanwhile, Counter Intelligence lets you pilot Inspirit, Flagship Vessel and use the Spacecraft to power your other artifacts with both +1/+1 and charge counters. Kilo, Apogee Mind is the backup option here, and happens to be an infinite combo with just about anything.

Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY has been an incredible success for Magic, with it becoming the best-selling set of all time even before global release. It’s easy to see why: there’s a wealth of incredible characters to play with, the power level is high, and there’s something for everyone among the four Commander Decks.

FINAL FANTASY has one of the highest legendary creature counts ever seen in Magic: The Gathering, with a large number of the classic Final Fantasy characters represented in cardboard form. Each of the decks is pretty solid here, with loads of new cards to potentially build around. The fight for top place is actually pretty close, but I think that the Counter Blitz Commander Deck takes the lead. Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian and Yuna, Grand Summoner are pulling in the same direction in this Commander Deck, and counters in Magic have always been pretty strong in the format. However, you’ll find plenty of excellent cards and a fun time no matter which one you buy, so don’t feel bad for following your heart on this one.

Takir: Dragonstorm is an immensely ‘Magic’ set. That’s partially the result of the return to a well-loved plane in Tarkir, but there’s also the fact that it’s filled with characters from a plane that doesn’t have a gimmick like race cars or cowboy hats. There’s nothing wrong with that, but Magic players were pretty stoked for Tarkir: Dragonstorm.

The set came with a whopping five Commander Decks, and while they’re all pretty good, the best of the bunch is definitely Sultai Arisen, which has some genuinely absurd cards in it. Teval, the Balanced Scale’s one of the two options for Precon Decks, where it ramps you ahead on mana, mills cards whenever it attacks, and creates Zombie Druid tokens every time a card leaves the graveyard. Talk about value!

Aetherdrift is an interesting set with a cast of popular characters. The racing theme felt a little out of place at times, but there’s no denying that even if you didn’t love the main set, the two Commander Decks are seriously impressive. Living Energy’s easily the best Energy Precon we’ve had yet and can become a powerhouse when upgraded (pun intended). However, the best out of the pair is Eternal Might, which despite being a Zombie-focused strategy it manages to stand out as a unique take on the archetype. It also houses the immense Hashaton, Scarab’s Fist: an awesomely fun Commander to build around.

We didn’t have any Commander Decks with Magic Foundations’ release and instead got an ungodly number of legendary creatures in the set. This means that Duskmourn: House of Horror was the final release of 2024 with Commander Decks, and while they were all pretty solid, there was definitely a standout choice out of the terrifying crop of cards. Endless Punishment had the powerful Valagovoth, Harrower of Souls at the helm and offers not only plenty of power but also some cool lines of play too. Valgavoth is also just an incredibly cool character–how could you not love a demon living in a basement?

Ah, Bloomburrow, how could we not love the most adorable Magic set ever made? Despite the cutesy look of the set this thing had absolutely game-ending weapons. You can’t go five minutes in basically any format without being beaten down by some cute animal in an aggressive strategy (I’m looking at you, Coruscation Mage). It turns out the Commander Decks were solid too, if not a bit mean (thanks, Ms. Bumbleflower).

The best one is Squirreled Away, which gave players what they wanted: more Squirrels! You can also look at the Animated Army Deck if you like the idea of turning your trash into treasure. If you want to give your Bloomburrow Commander Decks an extra cuteness factor then we’ve got our coverage on how to upgrade these into something truly adorable (but actually quite mean).

The Best Magic: The Gathering Commander Deck You Should Buy Right Now

Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck - Mardu Surge

  • Buy Now: Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000 Necron Dynasties Commander Precon Deck

If you’re looking for something different, then I’d recommend the Mardu Surge Commander Deck from Tarkir: Dragonstorm. Aggressive decks aren’t uncommon when it comes to Commander, but they can often feel like they lose momentum quickly. Mardu Surge manages to have a very cool vibe (thanks to the color purple) but maintains plenty of staying power without the need to be overly aggressive.

A lot of that is thanks to Zurgo Stormrender, a three-mana creature that creates tokens but lets you either draw cards or drain your opponents whenever a creature token you control leaves the battlefield. It’s a remarkably fun concept and great for newer players who want to turn things sideways, and it’s equally enjoyable for veteran players. It’s worth mentioning The Lost Cavern of Ixalan’s Explorers of the Deep Commander Deck, which cares about Merfolk and +1/+1 counters, but if you aren’t fussed about budget then Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000’s Necron Dynasties is an incredibly strong Commander Deck. That’s especially true if you’re a fan of the Games Workshop franchise (or Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2).

While it’s nice to grab the latest Commander Decks, sometimes you want to pick up a deck without spending a ton of money. Thankfully, the Starter Commander Decks are a massive boon in that respect. Token Triumph is a green and white deck that’s all about creating tokens and generating an impressively wide board state. It’s an easy one to upgrade if you decide to do so due to the sheer power of tokens in Commander, so that’s always a nice bonus.
