Simply put, Lorwyn Eclipsed looks incredible. There’s something for everyone with the release, from haymaker Commander cards in Mirrorform to more subtle options in Spell Snare, Lorwyn Eclipsed offers plenty for competitive and casual players alike.

With a brief hiatus after the releases of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender last year, it’s a pleasant feeling to return to something wholly original to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. That said, Lorwyn Eclipsed is brimming with incredible cards, some of which will remain desirable upon release due to strong demand. Let’s make our way through some of the cards you’ll be ecstatic to open from Play and Collector Boosters on Lorwyn Eclipsed release day and beyond.

#10 Wistfulness (Borderless)

Wistfulness

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Mythic

Wistfulness - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Wistfulness is one of the many Elemental Incarnations from Lorwyn Eclipsed, with this one looking primed to see play competitively upon release. What makes Wistfulness such a promising card is the ability to exile an artifact and enchantment, draw two cards (then discard a card), or have access to both effects if you’ve met the casting criteria. It enables you to be flexible with your mana and have the option to evoke it away if you prefer to have the card in the graveyard instead. This is something Modern Constructed Living End players have been considering as of late, as it’s just another way to reap some value before returning the creatures to the battlefield with a game-ending Living End.

Vibrance (Borderless)

Market Price: $11.80

Emptiness (Borderless)

Market Price: $10.00

Catharsis (Borderless)

While Wistfulness (and the rest of the cycle) don’t have an enter-the-battlefield trigger upon returning from the graveyard (unlike Fury, etc), it does come with a pushed stat line that makes it the most desirable one from the cycle leading up to Lorwyn Eclipsed’s release. Although we’ve focused on Wistfulness today, the other four Elemental Incarnations (Vibrance, Emptiness, Deceit, and Catharsis) also look highly promising for casual and competitive play. That said, opening any of these cards will likely deliver decent value with these considerations in mind, with a further multiplier if you open any in the stunning Borderless treatments.

#9 Moonshadow

Moonshadow

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Mythic

Moonshadow - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Moonshadow is a really curious card, and one that’s already seeing plenty of competitive interest since it shares similar characteristics to Death’s Shadow. Moonshadow, however, plays in the space of rewarding you for putting permanent cards into your graveyard from anywhere. If you achieve this, you remove a -1/-1 counter, which scales the power of the Moonshadow throughout the game.

In a format such as Modern Constructed, this clause becomes much easier to achieve — Fetch Lands, milling with Faithless Looting, or discarding with Psychic Frog — meaning there’s going to be a ton of brewing with the card upon release. And it’s this sentiment (along with general hype) that’s made Moonshadow a desirable card to open from Lorwyn Eclipsed, with Fable Frame and Japan Showcase printings also looking to be of interest to players.

#8 Painter’s Servant (Special Guests)

Painter’s Servant

Special Guests, Mythic

Painter's Servant - Special Guests - magic

The Special Guests make a return in Lorwyn Eclipsed, with Painter’s Servant looking to be the most desirable card from the latest crop. Lorwyn Eclipsed does things a little differently this time around, as there are 20 Special Guests cards to collect with the release, with 10 celebrating the vividness of Lorwyn and 10 showcasing the gloominess of Shadowmoor.

Painter’s Servant is about as unique as it gets for a Magic card, as it’s able to add another color to anything that isn’t on the battlefield and even permanents on the battlefield, meaning games of Magic can become a little funky if followed up with a Grindstone or a Iona, Shield of Emeria. And it’s with this particular design that has made a Painter’s Servant a valuable card regardless of the printing, making this Special Guests copy one of the cards you’ll be thrilled to open in Play and Collector Boosters upon release.

#7 Chronicle of Victory

Chronicle of Victory

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Mythic

Chronicle of Victory - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Typal themes make a significant return in Lorwyn Eclipsed, with Chronicle of Victory becoming one of the must-have cards to own from the set if you opt for this style of play. For six mana, the Chronicle can gift creatures of the named type you control with first strike, trample, and +2/+2. Not only that, but you’ll also draw a card whenever you cast a spell of the chosen type — this also extends to Kindred spells such as Ashling’s Command and Trystan’s Command, for example. Cards like Chronicle of Victory are often remarkably popular at casual Commander tables, as it’s another incredible payoff for playing with some of your favorite creature types in Magic.

#6 High Perfect Morcant (Extended Art)

High Perfect Morcant

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Rare

High Perfect Morcant - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Everyone’s favorite dominant Elf continues to be a must-want card from Lorwyn Eclipsed, as High Perfect Morcant remains one of the most-registered options for Commander play from the set (per EDHREC). Morcant was one of the early reveals from Lorwyn Eclipsed, who forces an opponent to blight a creature they control whenever she or another Elf enters play under your control. Given that Elf archetypes are synonymous with the term “Elfball” in Magic, it’ll be easy work to blight the opposing battlefield away. Not only that, you can grow those blight counters through proliferating, essentially making Morcant a devastating option as a more controlling Elf strategy.

While High Perfect Morcant didn’t come with a fancy Fable Frame treatment or similar, she does appear in Extended Art and this is exclusive to Collector Boosters. There are a lot of Elf Commander players out there these days, many of whom will be looking for the nicest treatments to adorn their favorite decks, and this printing of High Perfect Morcant is no different.

#5 The Borderless Reversible Shock Lands

Hallowed Fountain (Borderless)

Market Price: $13.66

Steam Vents (Borderless)

Market Price: $14.87

Temple Garden (Borderless)

Market Price: $11.78

Blood Crypt (Borderless)

Market Price: $14.14

Overgrown Tomb (Borderless)

Market Price: $13.54

The Shock Lands return in Lorwyn Eclipsed (as teased with the release of Edge of Eternities), where opening any of these will be an exciting addition to your personal collection. In particular, the Borderless Shock Lands will present decent value on the secondary market, as these are reversible and showcase the environments of both Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. Shock Lands are about as integral to Magic as they can be these days; they’re basically played everywhere in the formats they’re legal in.

You can open the Borderless Shock Lands in Play and Collector Boosters, with foils coming in at much lower pull rates (1% and 2.5%, respectively). Either way, opening a Shock Land of any kind will present an excellent opportunity to streamline those mana bases, with a further option to snap up copies at an affordable rate on release day and beyond. Prices are expected to dip soon enough on normal printings, as this usually happens when the market is flooded with singles — so do keep an eye out for cheaper copies if you’re looking to grow your personal collection.

#4 Formidable Speaker (Extended Art)

Formidable Speaker

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Rare

Formidable Speaker - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Competitive speaking, Formidable Speaker is likely to be the best card from Lorwyn Eclipsed. For three mana, the Speaker searches up a creature from your library and puts that card into your hand (at the expense of discarding a card), and can also untap another target permanent — oh, it’s also an Elf, because why not?

Formidable Speaker is primed to see Standard and Modern Constructed play upon release, and even sees heavy interest in more competitive Commander circles. There’s just so much going on with this card, to the point it scales favorably the more cards appear in future releases. Since Formidable Speaker is a card designed with the likeness of Magic World XXIX champion Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, the Extended Art printing is the only other fancy treatment of the powerhouse card. With that, you can expect Extended Art copies to be in demand and share a similar collectible sentiment as seen with High Perfect Morcant. The World Championship cards have historically been powerful throughout Magic’s history, and Jean-Emmanuel Depraz’s card is certainly no different.

#3 Hexing Squelcher (Showcase)

Hexing Squelcher

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Rare

Hexing Squelcher - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

It was the bestseller leading up to this week’s release, and Hexing Squelcher continues to be one of the hottest cards to own from Lorwyn Eclipsed. For two mana, the Goblin Sorcerer proposes quite a bit — it can ensure your spells aren’t met with counter magic and provides your creatures with a resource-draining ward ability for your opponents to pay. The Squelcher itself also comes with these stubborn abilities, making it one of the most-talked-about cards from Lorwyn Eclipsed for casual and competitive play. In particular, the stunning Fable Frame printing of the card will be of heightened interest to Commander players, as the fanciest treatments often see the most representation in the singleton format.

That said, opening any copy of Hexing Squelcher is going to feel incredible (perhaps less so for your opponents), and is the best card with this slate of effects since the printing of Spider-Punk in Marvel’s Spider-Man. If you aren’t looking to be a heel in games of Magic, you’re going to gain decent trade value as the demand for the card will remain strong even long after Lorwyn Eclipsed’s release.

#2 Bloom Tender (Japan Showcase – Fracture Foil)

Bloom Tender

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Mythic

Bloom Tender - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Bloom Tender sees a much-needed reprint in Lorwyn Eclipsed, with the Japan Showcase printing being one of the desirable cards to own from the release. Starting with this set, Japan Showcase cards are now only exclusive to Collector Boosters, with Fracture Foils continuing to be the notable ticket item from these releases. What makes Bloom Tender such a popular card to play in Commander is the card’s ability to propel on mana based on the color of your permanents on the battlefield. For example, if you have Tom Bombadil in play, you’ll be able to tap Bloom Tender for five mana (one of each color).

Selfless Safewright (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $324.56

Winnowing (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $169.09

Moonshadow (0396) (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $231.68

While Bloom Tender doesn’t slide into every Commander deck these days, it’s fantastic in the ones that are in more than three colors. There’s an increased rate of three, four, and five color commander options these days, especially with the prevalence of Universes Beyond and the Secret Lair Drop Series — meaning cards like Bloom Tender become a desirable one to open from Lorwyn Eclipsed. While the Japan Showcase and Fracture Foil printings will likely become some of the most valuable cards from the set overall, opening any copy of Bloom Tender is going to feel much-needed, especially if you’re someone who plays nothing but Commander.

#1 Bitterbloom Bearer (Borderless, Serialized – Double Rainbow Foil)

Bitterbloom Bearer

Lorwyn Eclipsed, Mythic

Bitterbloom Bearer - Lorwyn Eclipsed - magic

Rounding out the cards everyone wants to open from Lorwyn Eclipsed is the incredible Headliner card, which is the serialized Bitterbloom Bearer with stunning art done by Rebecca Guay. Bitterbloom Bearer inherits many traits seen with Shadowmoor’s Bitterblossom, making it an incredibly popular card to own from the release. Faeries remain a popular creature type to play in Magic, with Talion, the Kindly Lord and Alela, Cunning Conqueror being some of the more common options to play in Commander, making Bitterbloom Bearer a must-have for these typal decks.

Bitterbloom Bearer (Showcase)

Market Price: $31.01

Bitterbloom Bearer

Market Price: $23.72

Bitterblossom

Market Price: $28.80

While players will be thrilled to open any copy of Bitterbloom Bearer upon release, this unique printing of Bitterbloom Bearer appears in under 1% of Collector Boosters of any language. Pricing on serialized cards can vary depending on demand, the card’s overall popularity, and the serialization of the card itself. Generally, #001, #069 (nice), and #420 are historically the more in-demand serialized numbers to collect due to ongoing social media trends, with #067 perhaps being another valuable one to collect going forward. That said, you can expect the serialized copies of Bitterbloom Bearer to be anything in the three-to-four-figure range post-release, but can vary wildly.
