Get up to speed with the biggest Magic release of the year.
2026 is a year with an absurdly large amount of Magic: The Gathering releases, and while we’re pretty excited about each of the sets coming out this year, there’s no denying the appeal of Marvel Super Heroes. After all, the various universes of Marvel have an awful lot of fans in all sorts of media, and with Marvel’s Spider-Man being a set that many felt didn’t quite hit the mark. That said, we’re hoping that the next Marvel entry can amend those wrongs.

Marvel Super Heroes is another Standard set releasing this year, and that means it’ll be coming to you in all sorts of Constructed formats. Not only that, but we’re also getting four Commander Decks to support the release. This means there’s going to be a lot of cards coming to Magic soon, and if the other Universes Beyond sets are anything to go by, that also means a lot of legendary creatures to boot.

Once Marvel Super Heroes launches on June 26, it’ll bring new cards into Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Commander. That means that no matter what format you play, there’s a chance you could be staring down Captain America at some point in the near future. It’ll be legal in Standard for three years, but we’re expecting a few of the legendary creatures to find a strong home in Commander, with the overall intention from Wizards of the Coast to bring more players to Magic. There will be a Magic Online (MTGO) and MTG Arena release, but this will fall under the Through the Omenpaths naming convention, as seen previously with Marvel’s Spider-Man.
While Marvel Super Heroes is not an in-Magic universe set, it does mean there won’t be any Planeswalkers to support the release. Along with that, it looks as though we’ll be getting a fair few Heroes and Villains to add to the various typal decks in Magic, as well as a lot of overlapping synergies between the large number of teams in the Marvel universe. With Prereleases starting from June 19, it could be a great time to indulge in some Two-Headed Giant as well.

While we’re expecting to see more mechanics once previews begin in a few months, the cards we’ve seen already have a variety of returning mechanics. Villains look to be a significant part of the Marvel release once again, with cards like Thunderbolts Conspiracy specifically naming them (but also naming the Hero creature type too), making for a potentially interesting way of building a deck where you can boost both types. Saga enchantments make a return with Marvel Super Heroes, with The Coming of Galactus eventually creating a huge 16/16 token that’s more than capable of ruining someone’s day.
Baron Helmut Zemo comes with the boast mechanic that first debuted in Kaldheim, which lets you activate a special ability as long as the card attacks on that turn. Captain America, Super-Soldier gets a shield counter as he enters, which is a flavorful nod to his abilities in the Marvel universe. We’re also getting the blindingly fast Quicksilver, Brash Blur, a one-mana card that can begin the game in play if it’s in your opening hand. That’s already interesting and an effect that exists on the various Leyline cards in Magic, but also comes with the new power-up ability, which can only be activated once.

Marvel Super Heroes looks to be the big tentpole release of the year, as we’ll be getting Play, Collector, and Jumpstart Boosters, along with Prerelease Kits, Bundles, four Commander Decks (along with Collector’s Editions Commander Decks), Gift Bundle (releasing 07/17/2026), and various Scene Boxes.
While we don’t know all of the face cards for these Commander Decks quite yet, it’s been confirmed that Black Panther (Wakanda Forever), Doctor Doom (Doom Prevails), Captain America (Avengers Assemble), and Fantastic Four (The Fantastic Four) will be the key characters leading these decks. Collector’s Edition Commander Decks are much like their FINAL FANTASY counterparts, in that they will be printed in the Surge Foil treatment.
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes Art Treatments

We have a surprisingly large amount of information on the special art treatments this time around. Namor the Sub-Mariner shows off the Classic Comic treatment as seen in Marvel’s Spider-Man. Extinction Event is a reprint featured in the Source Material subset (under the Marvel Universe set code), and World War Hulk comes in the Comic Panel treatment. That’s already a lot, given how early the Marvel Super Heroes First Look is, but we’re also going to see more treatments in the coming months. Some of these styles might make the cards a little hard to read, but there’s no denying they do look quite good if you’re a budding Marvel fan.
