Top 10 Most Valuable Japan Showcase Cards in Magic: The Gathering

Showcasing immense value for Magic collectors.

It began with the Secret Lair Drop Series and then the Special Guests, with Wizards of the Coast now extending their foray into the collector space by offering distinct printings of playable cards. Called the Japan Showcase, these are a class of cards that incorporate art from Japanese artists and illustrators, with the aesthetics being similar to what you would see in Japanese hobby stores.Given the collectible nature, some of the Japan Showcase cards can be worth quite a bit on the secondary market — especially if they appear in the incredibly rare Fracture Foil treatment that is exclusive to Collector Boosters.

What are Japan Showcase Cards in Magic: The Gathering?

Starfield Vocalist (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $188.25

Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11 (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $179.49

Exalted Sunborn (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $184.08

Introduced with Duskmourn: House of Horror, Japan Showcase cards are Wizards’ attempt to cater to the competitive Japanese market, and these often appeared in Play and Collector Boosters. There isn’t much of a frame with these Japan Showcase cards — and that’s the intention — as this is to maximize the art as much as possible while offering something different for Magic players to collect. Furthermore, Japan Showcase cards can also appear in Traditional Foil and Fracture Foil, with the latter being one of the most exotic (and valuable) treatments seen in Magic: The Gathering as of late. With the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed, Wizards updated how they distribute Japan Showcase cards, and these only appear in Collector Boosters from now on.

With Japan Showcase cards becoming a fixture of most releases these days, there’s a surprising amount of value in these cards that you may have missed upon first blush, given some of the choice of cards receiving this unique treatment. Take Think Twice from Magic: The Gathering Foundations as an example, a card you can readily purchase for a few cents, but the Fracture Foil Japan Showcase printing is currently worth upwards of $80.

And much like with the Special Guests, this subset will grow with almost every Magic release. You can expect around ten Japan Showcase cards to appear in non-Universes Beyond releases moving forward (with some instances of them appearing in Universes Beyond sets), which is a similar cadence used for the Special Guests.

That aside, let’s look at some of the most valuable Japan Showcase cards you can open in Play and Collector Boosters right now. We’re going to focus on the Fracture Foils from the series today, as these command the most value with a relevant focus on the non-foil printings as well.

#10 Enduring Vitality (Duskmourn: House of Horror)

Enduring Vitality (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $211.28

Enduring Vitality (Showcase)

Market Price: $55.14

Appearing in Duskmourn: House of Horror, Enduring Vitality has quickly become a Commander must-have as it’s essentially another copy of Cryptolith Rite for the various creature-heavy decks in the format. One thing that makes the Elk Glimmer so good is that the card returns to play as an enchantment if it’s answered in combat or with any non-exile removal. It’s that ability to become a robust mana enabler that has caused the card to become a valuable hit from the Japan Showcase series, and is the most expensive one from the bunch in the Duskmourn: House of Horror release at the time of publication.

#9 Krang, Utrom Warlord (Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Krang, Utrom Warlord (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $216.24

Krang, Utrom Warlord (Showcase)

Market Price: $49.55

Becoming a valuable card to open from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Krang, Utrom Warlord is one of the many villains from the franchise and packs quite the Utrom-sized punch on the battlefield. For nine mana, Krang comes with a mixture of stubborn keywords and gives those exact keywords to other artifact creatures you control on the battlefield. This one is particularly excellent in any artifact-focused Commander archetypes led by Breya, Etherium Shaper and company, who also happen to be a nice target to grab with a Tinker if you’re partial to Vintage Cube. With Krang being a Akroma’s Memorial-esque card for artifact creatures, the Japan Showcase printing is becoming a desirable hit to open from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collector Boosters since release. Not to mention, Kraang also demands the card is valuable — so, here we are.

#8 Muldrotha, the Gravetide (Magic: The Gathering Foundations)

Muldrotha, the Gravetide (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $231.96

Muldrotha, the Gravetide (Showcase)

Market Price: $58.61

Magic Foundations also saw a strong selection of Japan Showcase cards to collect upon release, and one of these is the ever-present Muldrotha, the Gravetide, which remains one of the more powerful Sultai commanders you can play in the singleton format. For six mana, Muldrotha allows you to play a land card and cast a permanent spell of each permanent type from your graveyard during each of your turns. This means you can really leverage your graveyard to accumulate a ton of value during games, perhaps with an Overlord of the Balemurk on the battlefield for good measure. While Muldrotha is one of the few commanders you can collect in the Japan Showcase treatment, you can expect more popular cards to see the treatment in the future due to the widespread popularity of Commander in Magic.

#7 Icetill Explorer (Edge of Eternities)

Icetill Explorer (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $258.20

Icetill Explorer (Showcase)

Market Price: $82.44

Icetill Explorer is in Edge of Eternities and has quickly become one of the hottest rares to own from the space-centric release. For four mana, the Explorer comes with a combination of Exploration and Crucible of Worlds, with the added ability to mill a card whenever a land enters the play under your control. Icetill Explorer is one of the best cards for any Land-based strategy in Commander, with success filtering down into Constructed formats such as Standard and Modern. And while the Fracture Foil printing is commanding incredible value, the Japan Showcase printing is actually the most expensive non-foil card from Edge of Eternities at the time of publication.

#6 Bloodthirsty Conqueror (Magic: The Gathering Foundations)

Bloodthirsty Conqueror (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $305.16

Bloodthirsty Conqueror (Showcase)

Market Price: $111.69

A similar sentiment can apply to Bloodthirsty Conqueror, which is another valuable hit from the Japan Showcase series. Bloodthirsty Conqueror is the creature alternative to the excellent Exquisite Blood and pairs best with Sanguine Bond, creating an infinite combo as long as you have a way to gain life to kick things off. Another notable feature of Bloodthirsty Conqueror is that it’s a Vampire, and the creature type has long been popular to play in Commander, especially with the renewed interest of Edgar Markov with the release of Innistrad Remastered last year. Outside of the Fracture Foil and Japan Showcase printings of Bloodthirsty Conqueror, it remains one of the most expensive cards to own from Magic Foundations and looks to have an extremely resilient financial future as a result.

#5 Bloom Tender (Lorwyn Eclipsed)

Bloom Tender (0400) (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $343.28

Bloom Tender (0390) (Showcase)

Market Price: $62.55

Lorwyn Eclipsed continues to be a huge hit with players and collectors alike, so it isn’t a surprise to see Bloom Tender becoming a desirable card to open from the Japan Showcase series. First printed in Shadowmoor, Bloom Tender enables you to tap the card for mana for each color among permanents you control. For example, if you have The Ur-Dragon and a Bloom Tender on the battlefield, Bloom Tender will tap for five mana (one of each color) as The Ur-Dragon has every color in its color identity. Bloom Tender also happens to be an Elf, which means it’s a must-have for decks led by Maralen, Fae Ascendant and Voja, Jaws of the Conclave that heavily focus on this creature type. And since Lorwyn Eclipsed’s release, the Fracture Foil printing of Bloom Tender remains one of the most expensive cards to own from the set.

#4 Super Shredder (Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Super Shredder (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $383.47

Super Shredder (Showcase)

Market Price: $92.44

It’s the hallmark mythic from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (sorry, Krang), which means the Japan Showcase printing of Super Shredder presents serious value on the secondary market. What makes Super Shredder so exciting to play in casual formats is the ability to grow in +1/+1 counters whenever another permanent leaves play, and that includes anything from your opponent’s side of the table. It also amusingly includes your actual opponent, as if they lose a game of Commander, all of their permanents leave play, leading to Super Shredder’s triggered ability triggering multiple times.

Combined with menace, Super Shredder can boast a ton of pressure via Commander damage, and has become a popular option to play in casual circles as a result. If EDHREC is anything to go by, it’s a card that will continue to see play in the months to come. Another thing to note is that Shredder is a popular antagonist from a well-loved franchise, which means there will be further demand among Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans — and this includes the stunning Japan Showcase treatments.

#3 Twinflame Tyrant (Magic: The Gathering Foundations)

Twinflame Tyrant (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $429.37

Twinflame Tyrant (Showcase)

Market Price: $117.48

If there’s one thing Commander players love to do, it’s having access to cards that can double up on effects or triggers, which is why Twinflame Tyrant is becoming a sought-after card to own from the Japan Showcase series. Appearing in Magic Foundations, the Dragon doubles any damage from any source you control that would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, meaning the output from Twinflame Tyrant can become rather ridiculous rather quickly.

It’s also becoming a popular Commander card in a mixture of Mono-Red and Dragon archetypes led by Torbran, Thane of Red Fell and The Ur-Dragon, as it just allows you to propel damage output without much effort. And due to the evergreen demand of casual players wanting cards that can double up on particular effects, Twinflame Tyrant is one of the more notable Japan Showcase cards you can have in your collection right now.

#2 Doubling Season (Magic: The Gathering Foundations)

Doubling Season (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $547.22

Doubling Season (Showcase)

Market Price: $173.51

It probably isn’t too much of a shock to see Doubling Season featured here (given the card’s pedigree in Commander), but here we are. Since Commander’s inception in 2011, Doubling Season has remained a permanent fixture of the format, as being able to double-up on token creation (as well as counters) is remarkably good for a variety of archetypes. From Planeswalkers to tokens, Doubling Season is often a must-have for any Commander that incorporates green, as it generates so much incremental value throughout a game.

The card saw a much-needed reprint in Magic Foundations, which allowed players to pick up the Commander staple for a more affordable rate since the 2024 release. And if you’re someone who’s after the most exotic variants for your favorite Commander deck, then the Japan Showcase and Fracture Foil variants are for you. Plus, there’s a bunch of cats — what’s not to love?

#1 Llanowar Elves (Magic: The Gathering Foundations)

Llanowar Elves (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: $709.37

Llanowar Elves (Showcase)

Market Price: $194.82

We discussed earlier how the Japan Showcase printing of Think Twice is more valuable than it seems; well, the same also applies to Llanowar Elves, which is the most valuable Japan Showcase card at the time of publication. Appearing in Magic Foundations, Llanowar Elves is one of the most iconic creatures in Magic’s history and has established the power level of Standard over the next five years. The Fracture Foil Japan Showcase printing of Llanowar Elves is the most valuable card from the series, and it’s because of the casual and competitive overlap. It’s also an Elf, and Elves have been a long-time fixture of Magic in multiple formats, which only furthers demand for the more desirable printings of these must-play cards.
