Marvel’s Spider-Man is here, and these are the cards you’ll want to open on release day and beyond!
Marvel’s Spider-Man releases globally on September 26, introducing a fresh way for people to swing into Magic: The Gathering for the first time. While Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t your boilerplate Magic set, the release will do plenty to bring far-out audiences into the game through association with iconic characters and easy-to-parse game mechanics.
And even though Marvel’s Spider-Man is a much smaller Standard release, there’s enough going on that’ll leave budding Marvel enthusiasts thrilled with some of the cards they’ll open in Play and Collector Boosters on release day. If you’re much newer to Magic: The Gathering and don’t want to invest in Play Boosters from the get-go, check to see if you have a local game store that’s under the WPN banner — and if so, you’ll be able to grab a Marvel’s Spider-Man Welcome Deck or two and learn the game that way.

While not exhaustive, let’s make our way into some of the cards you’ll be thrilled to open from Marvel’s Spider-Man Play and Collector Boosters on release day and beyond. The Standard release is much smaller compared to other recent sets in Edge of Eternities and Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY, but there’s some decent value to be had from Marvel’s Spider-Man, especially if you’re a budding Marvel collector.
#8 Cosmic Spider-Man (Extended Art)
Cosmic Spider-Man
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Let’s begin with Cosmic Spider-Man, which is one of two five-color Commander options from the Marvel’s Spider-Man release. For one of each color of mana, Cosmic Spider-Man grants every Spider you control flying, first strike, trample, lifelink, and haste at the beginning of combat on your turn — and these effects last until the end of your turn. Essentially, Cosmic Spider-Man enables you to play every Spider-Man card from the Marvel’s Spider-Man set in Commander, allowing you to have a flavorful strategy and turning everything sideways with your various Spider cards.
While traditional copies will be in demand upon release as everyone looks to build the “Spider-Man matters” Commander strategy, it’s the Extended Art printing exclusive to Collector Boosters and Gift Bundles (releasing October 17) that will be of most interest with Marvel’s Spider-Man fans. Often, when players put together a flavorful Commander build like this one, they also go all out on the most exotic treatments. In total, there are roughly 40 of these Extended Art cards to collect in Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Cosmic Spider-Man will be one of the few that players will want the most.
#7 Multiversal Passage (Borderless)
Multiversal Passage
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rare

Multiversal Passage is one of the few mana options appearing in Marvel’s Spider-Man, and one that’s primed to see strong casual and competitive play upon release. Having access to a card that can become any basic land type upon entering is ideal, along with paying two life for the card to enter play untapped. It’s the Borderless printing that will be of interest to collectors in particular, as it is one of the few cards that creates a scene of the various Spider-Heroes battling it out on the streets of New York.
Unlike many of the other Borderless treatments in Marvel’s Spider-Man, you can open these in both Play and Collector Boosters in either non-foil or Traditional Foil, allowing you to re-create the iconic scene in whichever treatment you prefer the most. As Magic: The Gathering enters a more casual and collector space, these Borderless Scene cards are becoming quite popular because they present a different way to showcase these stunning cards outside of just playing them.
#6 Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer (Extended Art)
Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Despite Marvel’s Spider-Man not having any form of Commander Precon Decks to support the set, there’s a slew of interesting Commanders to build on release day and beyond. Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer is one of these, who returns a creature from your graveyard to the battlefield if cast. That isn’t all, as Anti-Venom comes with the resilient ability of growing through +1/+1 counters if any damage would be dealt to Anti-Venom (and that damage is prevented). At the time of publication, Anti-Venom is the second-most registered Commander from Marvel’s Spider-Man according to EDHREC (with Norman Osborn squeaking ahead), as it just looks to be an absolutely brutal option to have access to in the command zone.
With recent cards such as With Great Power…, Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought, and Spectacular Spider-Man being some of the must-haves for Anti-Venom, the Symbiote Hero is looking to be one of the hottest cards to open from Marvel’s Spider-Man. As mentioned with Cosmic Spider-Man before, Extended Art treatments will be desirable with collectors and players, as these are some of the fanciest versions of these Marvel characters to own and play with in Commander.
#5 Opposition Agent (Borderless Source Material – Marvel Universe)
Opposition Agent
Marvel Universe Eternal-Legal, Mythic

Marvel’s Spider-Man sees the Borderless Source Material cards, which are under the Marvel’s Spider-Man: Eternal Legal umbrella. There are 40 of these cards to collect, which reference the diverse and iconic Marvel comic book covers produced over the company’s rich history. With Opposition Agent, this illustrates the Venom Vol. 4 #29 cover and the story of how Flash Thompson became Agent Venom. As for the card, Opposition Agent remains one of the most polarizing cards you can play in Commander, and is one of the many Game Changers in the format.

Market Price: $16.81

Market Price: $19.05

Market Price: $20.06
And it’s with this polarization and raw power that’s made this particular printing of Opposition Agent one of the high-value hits from the Borderless Source Material series at the time of publication. As all of the cards from this series are reprints, it enables a decent opportunity to acquire these cards at a more affordable rate — especially if you don’t care for the aesthetics and just want a legal piece of cardboard to play with. This sentiment is especially true for Parallel Lives, which is another Commander staple that’s part of this exciting Marvel-flavored series. Compared to previous bonus sheets as seen in recent Standard sets, the Borderless Source Material cards appear in around 1 in 24 of Marvel’s Spider-Man Play Boosters. However, Traditional Foils are exclusive to Collector Boosters and appear roughly 25% of the time.
#4 Gwenom, Remorseless
Gwenom, Remorseless
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Next is Gwenom, Remorseless, who’s seeing plenty of attention with players as she’s essentially a Bolas’s Citadel you can access from the command zone for Commander play. Sure, you do need to jump through some hoops to turn her ability online, but it’s ultimately worth the effort for the amount of value you can accrue over a turn. Upon attacking, you’re able to look at the top card of your library at any time, where you may play any cards from the top of your library — but if you cast a spell this way, you have to pay life equal to the card’s mana value. And yes, this allows you to play land cards from the top of your library with Gwenom, but usual restrictions apply.
It’s with this incredibly powerful effect, coupled with Gwen Stacy being such a popular character in the Spider-Verse, that has led to some serious value (and attention) for the card. While prices are likely to dip upon Spider-Man’s release as more cards continue to flood the market, you can expect Gwenom, Remorseless to be one of the higher-value mythic rares from the set.
#3 Eddie Brock (Borderless Classic Comic)
Eddie Brock
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

Marvel’s Spider-Man also sees Borderless Classic Comic cards, with three mythic rares adorned in the iconic comic treatment for players to collect. Appearing in Collector Boosters only, Eddie Brock is one of the three cards to see this treatment (the other two being Miles Morales and Peter Parker), which also happens to be the most desirable to own at the time of publication.

Eddie Brock is one of the most popular anti-heroes in all of comic book history, so it’s no surprise to see the various Venom variants in Marvel’s Spider-Man gather interest as collectors look to own these stunning cards upon release. What makes this Borderless Classic Comic card so special, however, is that Venom, Lethal Protector side references works from the Venom: Lethal Protector #1 comic printed in 1993. It’s owning that little bit of comic book history that’s going to make this unique printing of Eddie Brock one of the most desirables ones to own from Marvel’s Spider-Man, while also being a genuinely exciting Commander in its own right.
#2 The Spider-Man Costume Change Cards (Borderless – Textured Foil)

Market Price: $1,126.22

Market Price: $1,019.93

Market Price: $953.28

Market Price: $653.67

Market Price: $30.24

Market Price: $723.66
Another Marvel’s Spider-Man Collector Booster exclusive is the various printings of Spectacular Spider-Man appearing in the Textured Foil treatment. Called the Borderless Costume Change cards, there are seven of these cards to collect (with a Borderless eighth version in the base set) and appear in less than 1% of Collector Boosters. While there hasn’t been any confirmation on whether some variants are rarer to open than others, these will be some of the chase collector cards from Marvel’s Spider-Man.
As for the card, Spectacular Spider-Man is looking incredible for any White-based Commander strategy, as you’re able to sacrifice Spider-Man to give the rest of your team hexproof and indestructible until the end of the turn. If you’re feeling especially mean, throwing this version of Spider-Man into Agatha’s Soul Cauldron is one way to stop your opponents from ever targeting any of your threats. And some of you already agree, as it’s the base printing of Spectacular Spider-Man that became one of the top-purchased cards from Marvel’s Spider-Man going into release week.
#1 The Soul Stone (All Variants)
The Soul Stone
Marvel’s Spider-Man, Mythic

If you’ve been following Marvel’s Spider-Man closely, it won’t be a huge surprise to see the coveted The Soul Stone be the card everyone will want to open on Marvel’s Spider-Man release day and beyond. And while there’s added emphasis on the Textless Cosmic Foil printing appearing in only Collector Boosters, opening any version of The Soul Stone will go down a treat. As there will be multiple Marvel x Magic: The Gathering releases over the next few years, collecting all of the Infinity Stones (and the Gauntlet) will be a huge focus for a number of collectors, making The Soul Stone the first of many cards they will want from this multi-set collaboration.
Notoriety in Marvel’s history aside, The Soul Stone is an excellent mana-generating artifact for Commander play. For two mana, you can tap the card for a single black mana and is indestructible, making it better than Arcane Signet in various Black-heavy Commander strategies. You can also harness the Stone by exiling a creature you control and paying seven mana, where you’ll be able to return a creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield at the beginning of your upkeep. That’s a lot of value in a two mana card, and gives us a snapshot of how the five other Infinity Stones may play out in future releases.

Market Price: $1,732.57

Market Price: $166.17

Market Price: $66.84
As for rarity, the Textless Cosmic Foil version of The Soul Stone is extremely rare and appears in low quantities of Collector Boosters of any language. The Borderless Gauntlet version is as rare as the many aforementioned Costume Change Spider-Man cards, appearing in less than 1% of Collector Boosters, and is already commanding serious value on the secondary market. Even recently, there have been reported sales of The Soul Stone (Textless Cosmic Foil), with one already selling on eBay for $10,500 to give you an idea of the value this card is going to command.

Market Price: $158.59

Market Price: $538.93

Market Price: $60.76
Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man releases September 26, where you’ll be able to snap up Play and Collector Boosters along with Scene Boxes, Bundles, and Prerelease Kits upon release. There aren’t any Commander Precon Decks this time around, but the set introduces Welcome Decks (available at WPN stores only) to begin your journey into Magic: The Gathering.
