Everything We Know About MTG’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Heroes in a card-shell.

After sneakily infiltrating Lorwyn Eclipsed Prereleases not too long ago, the Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set is nearly upon us, and features an awful lot of turtles. That’s not a huge surprise, but there are some interesting things to see in the set. So, we thought we’d make sure you know everything you need to know about the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles release.

Everything We Know About Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Turtles in Time
The Ooze
Sally Pride, Lioness Leader

As the first Universes Beyond set of the year, it’ll be interesting to see how this is all received, coming in hot after the success of Lowryn EclipsedMagic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is Standard-legal, so you’ll be watching these cards rubbing shoulders with Avatar: The Last AirbenderMarvel’s Spider-Man, and more. There’s no doubt that a lot of Magic fans are of an age where we grew up watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and with the sheer volume of reboots the franchise has had, just about everyone under the age of 50 has been through their own version of it.

We’re getting a huge slew of new legendary creatures with this set, with there not only being a few different versions of the turtles themselves, but also team-up cards showing two of the boys off at once. Along with that, we’re getting some new Class enchantment cards and a lot of artifact synergies as well.

We will be skipping Planeswalkers once again, which is good or bad depending on how you feel about them in a general sense. We do wonder if we’ll see a Universes Beyond Planeswalker before the end of the year at this point, though. Either way, there appear to be some very fun mechanics and themes coming into the game and seeing a notable boost, which is always nice to see.

Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mechanics

Raphael's Technique
Ninja Teen
Splinter's Technique

We’re getting a new mechanic, and somehow not getting ninjutsu in the set, at least not that we’ve seen. Sneak is pretty similar, as sneak allows you to cast a spell for a different cost if you also return an unblocked attacking creature you control to your hand. So, it’s similar to ninjutsu, but can also be on noncreature spells, like Raphael’s Technique.

We’re also getting Mutagen tokens, adding to the versatility of artifact tokens in casual formats. These are artifact tokens you can pay one mana and sacrifice to put a +1/+1 counter on a creature, but only at sorcery speed. That’s good news for all token decks, and as ever, also for Korvold, Fae-Cursed King in Commander. Class enchantments also make a return, where you can pay mana to “level up” and gain new effects. We weren’t really expecting to see them outside of Dungeons & Dragons and Bloomburrow sets, but that’s not a bad thing in our eyes.

Disappear isn’t a brand new ability in Magic: The Gathering, but it does come with a new name. Some of you may be familiar with revolt from Aether Revolt, and disappear is the essentially same thing. What this means is you’ll gain a benefit whenever a permanent leaves the battlefield under your control, as seen with Krang & Shredder.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Commander Deck - Turtle Power!

Goodness, we’re getting a lot of products with this set. We’re getting Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Draft Night, Prerelease Packs, and Bundles as usual. We’re getting a five-color Commander Precon Deck called Turtle Power!, which is all about pairing up characters and buffing your own creatures. It’s interesting to see only one here, and for it to be five colors.

We’re also getting a Pizza Bundle (releasing March 27). Pizza Bundles include nine Play Boosters, one Collector Booster, 25 non-foil Pizza Lands, five foil Pizza Lands, two foil Pizza Bundle promo cards, an oversized spindown life counter, two reference cards, and one card-storage box. It also looks like a pizza box, but it probably won’t actually come with any pizza. Don’t eat pizza and play Magic: The Gathering; the two don’t mix very well, even though pizza is always a good choice.

The other new option is the Turtle Team-Up box, a co-operative play experience that comes with four Play Boosters and four themed decks, each based on one of the main turtles themselves. It also includes an enemy deck, designed to fight against the other decks. It comes with a tutorial booklet to explain how that’s all going to work, but we’re pretty excited about this one.

Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Art Treatments

Forest (0257)
Mountain (0256)
Island (0306) (Surge Foil)

With the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there are several different treatments to support the set. The set sees Full Art Pizza Basic Lands, each depicting the land type as pizza toppings. If pizza isn’t your thing, then there’s the Rooftop Basic Lands — these showcase the various turtle characters jumping around New York City.

Dark Ritual

Commander: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mythic

Dark Ritual - Commander: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - magic

There are also Borderless Pizza cards that appear only in the Pizza Bundle, with Dark Ritual being one of many to collect upon release. These are all reprints, and it’s been confirmed that Food Chain and Commander’s Plate also appear from this crop, with more cards to be revealed soon.

Doubling Season (Borderless)

Market Price: $26.57

Splinter of the Shadows - Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm (Borderless)

Market Price: $33.36

All Will Be One (Borderless)

Market Price: $32.81

The Source Material cards return with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and there are twenty to collect. At the time of writing, the notables are Doubling Season, Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm, and All Will Be One. With Doubling Season, this uses artworks as seen from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1. You’ll be able to open non-foils from Play and Collector Boosters, and foil versions of these in Collector Boosters only.

Turtles Forever (Extended Art)

Market Price: $29.36

South Wind Avatar (Extended Art)
Raphael, Ninja Destroyer (Borderless)

Market Price: $10.56

We’re also seeing some usual suspects with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as there will be Extended Art and Showcase treatments to collect, along with stunning Silhouette cards of some of your favorite characters.

Shredder, Shadow Master (Borderless) (Surge Foil)

Market Price: $240.00

Ninja Pizza (Borderless) (Surge Foil)

Market Price: $107.35

Donatello, the Brains (0085) (Borderless) (Surge Foil)

If you’re coming from the video game side of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then the Pixel Showcase is for you. These will appear in only Collector Boosters and only in Surge Foil, but you can expect these to be popular with the more retro crowd.

Leonardo, Sewer Samurai (Borderless) (Gold-Stamped Signature)

Market Price: n/a

Donatello, Mutant Mechanic (Borderless) (Gold-Stamped Signature)

Market Price: n/a

Michelangelo, Improviser (Borderless) (Gold-Stamped Signature)

Raphael, Ninja Destroyer (Borderless) (Gold-Stamped Signature)

The Headliner cards this time around come from Kevin Eastman, the original illustrator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which will depict one of each of the four main characters with a gold stamp of his signature. These will be some of the rarer Headliner cards you can open in Magic, and appear in Collector Boosters only.

Bebop & Rocksteady

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rare

Bebop & Rocksteady - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - magic

Scene cards also return with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as seen with Bebop & Rocksteady and Krang & Shredder. There are two different scenes to collect this time around: one called the Turtle Tots Pizza Party Scene and the other called Shredder Rooftop Battle. You’ll be able to open these in both Play and Collector Boosters, but these do not appear in a separate Scene Box product (as with previous Universes Beyond releases).

Krang, Utrom Warlord (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: n/a

Turtles in Time (Showcase)

Market Price: $21.94

Super Shredder (Showcase) (Fracture Foil)

Market Price: n/a

One surprising addition to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the Japan Showcase cards, which mark the first Universes Beyond release to use this series to support a set. As with Japan Showcase cards in previous sets, there are ten of these to collect, and they only appear in Collector Boosters. Japan Showcase Fracture Foils are also exclusive to Collector Boosters, and will become some of the valuable hits from the release.

Don & Raph, Hard Science (Showcase)
Triceraton Commander (Showcase)

Market Price: $11.96

April O'Neil, Hacktivist (0227) (Showcase)

Lastly, we’re rounding out with the Sewer Frame treatment. These appear on about 30 cards from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle release, and use the cartoon aesthetics that made the intellectual property so popular decades ago.
